The Billion Dollar Brew™ (Paris Edition)

Beyond The Billion hosted The Billion Dollar Brew (Paris Edition), our signature convening, in partnership with Dell Technologies. This event united trailblazing LPs, GPs, and founders to drive meaningful conversations on fueling investments in female-founded companies and accelerating women-led innovation globally.

The Venture Landscape for Female-Led Innovation: A Snapshot of Progress and Challenges

France’s venture ecosystem reflects both strides and ongoing hurdles in achieving gender equity. In 2023, women-founded startups in France secured an impressive €1.7 billion across 276 deals. While in Europe women-led VCs grew by 76%, raising €4.4 billion, female founders in Europe still received only 1.8% of total VC capital last year.

Leading Our Conversations:

Some Key Takeaways:

For “returns-first” investors diversifying into scalable women-led enterprises

Data-backed opportunities: Women-led companies consistently exhibit strong returns. Specific funds have seen significant success, such as investing in companies that have grown to be unicorns within female-led portfolios. Investing in women is a high-return opportunity not a concession. Many investors recognize this as an opportunity to achieve alpha.

Breaking traditional biases: Traditional pattern-matching in VC has often excluded women. Disrupting this bias by consciously seeking diverse founders unlocks untapped potential and helps uncover high-performing investments. Three key strategies include:

  • Investing in women-led companies that have already demonstrated momentum in either revenue growth and/or client acquisition (i.e., product/market fit).
  • Ensuring women-founded, co-founded companies applying for funding are given a fighting chance by going straight to the Investment Committee (IC) without screening from more junior associates (each layer of review presents the risk of bias).
  • Hiring a Female Founder who has exited her company as a Female Partner to bring more deals to the table and to serve on the IC— these are founders who have a valuable operational track record.

Encouraging signs for female founders in the ecosystem and implications for VCs

Regional progress: Regions like Europe are seeing rapid growth in capital allocation for women-led businesses, with venture-backed funds increasing their participation rates. Countries like France show particular promise, with targeted initiatives like the France 2030 program.

Support networks: Ecosystem champions and collaborative programs, such as Dell Technologies’ city-specific funding blueprints, are bridging resource gaps and providing information on essential tools, capital access opportunities, and mentorship for women founders via Dell Women’s Entrepreneurship Network (DWEN)

Incentivizing Limited Partners (LPs) to require diversity in fund portfolios

Performance-based metrics: LPs are beginning to understand the correlation between diverse portfolios and superior returns. Educating LPs on these outcomes, alongside success stories from inclusive funds, helps shift the narrative.

Policy-level commitments: Some funds are integrating clauses or pledges to allocate a percentage of investments to women-led enterprises. For example, initiatives requiring general partners (GPs) to prioritize diverse hiring have proven effective in advancing female representation in leadership.

Engaging women with wealth to invest in women-led startups

Targeting wealth transfer beneficiaries: The ongoing generational wealth transfer presents an opportunity. Women and Next-Gen investors inheriting significant wealth often seek to invest in ventures that align with their values, including women-led businesses.

Educational initiatives: Programs that demystify investment processes for women with wealth, focusing on their natural inclinations toward impact-driven investments, can increase participation. Examples include workshops on navigating venture investments and understanding diverse portfolios.

Systemic solutions and cultural shifts

Addressing structural barriers: Societal infrastructure improvements, such as better childcare support, are critical. Women disproportionately bear caregiving responsibilities, affecting their entrepreneurial opportunities.

Promoting inclusivity in tech: Encouraging women to enter high-growth sectors like AI and climate tech, where they are currently underrepresented, could reshape industry demographics and foster innovation-led economic gains.

We at Beyond The Billion extend our deepest gratitude to our partners — Dell Technologies, and our incredible Ecosystem Champions: Businettes, European Women in VC, Global Invest Her, Startup Nation Central, and Techstars Sustainability Paris.

Some quotables from the panel:

“As a founder, you face the double challenge of convincing investors not only about the innovation of your tech but also proving you are the right entrepreneur to lead it.” – Stephanie Nenta Mbianda, Directrice Générale & Co-Founder, Xtramile

“We need to rethink what success looks like. LPs must reevaluate the ‘pattern-matching’ of past success and recognize the potential of diverse teams. This does not mean lowering the standards, but acknowledging that women and people of color have a more circuitous journey, and we must remove legacy barriers. For example, an operational track record is a useful proxy. I was thrilled to learn that  75% of all capital raised by female GPs in Europe came from the UK, France, and the Netherlands. France has an opportunity to fuel women as capital allocators and innovators in a large way.” – Sarah Chen-Spellings, Co-Founder & Managing Partner,  Beyond The Billion

“Quotas have worked for board representation in France—why not for venture? By mandating gender balance, progress accelerates.” – Fleur Pellerin, Former Minister of Culture of France, Founder &  Managing Partner,  Korelya Capital

“I didn’t realize I was a statistical anomaly until we launched SISTA. We raised funds, exited, and thrived despite the odds. That resilience is what drives me to invest in more women.” – Tatiana Jama, Founder & Managing Partner, SISTAFUND

“In the consumer space, we see a much more balanced deal flow. Diversifying investment strategies might be key to funding more female-led ventures; and that’s exactly what we are working on.” – Fleur Pellerin, Former Minister of Culture of France, Founder &  Managing Partner,  Korelya Capital

“As women founders, resilience is in our DNA. Often, we have to think outside the box and do more with less. Creativity and persistence are essential.” – Stephanie Nenta Mbianda, Directrice Générale & Co-Founder, Xtramile

About The Organizers

Beyond The Billion is the world’s first and largest consortium of venture funds pledged to invest over $1Bn into women-founded companies. Beyond the Billion’s (BTB) first pledge campaign was launched as The Billion Dollar Fund for Women in October 2018 with an audacious goal of catalyzing $1 billion into the hands of women founders globally, addressing the gender venture investment gap where women were receiving only 2.2% of all venture capital funding. In under 2 years, $638 million of the first billion pledged was deployed by our partner funds into close to 800 women-founded companies, of which 11 have been recognized as unicorns— from Canva to EverlyWell. To continue to build on this momentum, we launched Beyond The Billion, to catalyze capital deployed to and with these venture funds, ensuring their continued capacity to invest by bridging LPs and GPs, building a community of institutional investors, sovereign funds, IFIs, DFIs, family offices, wealth managers and high net worth individuals; driving the agenda collectively.

Beyond The Billion, 2018–2025.

Thank You

Together, we mobilized $1B+ into women-founded companies.

A chapter closes, but the work continues in new forms.
